Dr. Gabor Mate, a Psychiatrist from Canada, has written about drug addicts because he is an expert. I will write this article and be writing a lot from his articles and interviews. His talk about drug addicts that are more painfully conscious of this void than most people, and has limited means of escaping it. He goes on to say that the rest of us, like you and me who have been able to stay away from drugs or alcohol have other ways. the following is from Dr. Mate’s interview with Eric Zimmer.
“A sense of deficient emptiness pervades our entire culture. The Drug Addict is more painfully conscious of this void than most people and has limited means of escaping it. The rest of us find other ways of suppressing our fear of emptiness or of distracting ourselves from it.”
Dr. Mate goes on to say that children have a primary need to attach to a parent — to attach to nurturing adults. That is just a need of all mammals.
Ss long as the culture provides an environment in which children are related to nurturing adults, especially in a village or a clan or a community setting – that child is very secure. One of the things that our culture has done is it has broken up the clan, the tribe, he community, the neighborhood.
Children have to attach to somebody. They cannot handle life without being connected to somebody. And who do they attach to? Who do they connect to? They connect to the peer group.
Sense of Deficient Emptiness
Dr. Mate goes on to say about feeding the wolf but also the externals of our culture, entertainment, sports, and politicians have made it seem like their lifestyle is best for you and me. But, in actuality, we have our own value, we are what gives us purpose and meaningful life. We are Ok, just do what is best for you and develop into that person you want to be for a meaningful life. Feed YOU.
