Although it might appear that the words “choice” and “decision” are just synonyms for the same thing, there is actually a defference between the two. They say that choice connectss to the lace of deseired intention,, values and beliefs. Decision connects to the place of behavior, performance and consequences. In that case, choices are connected to reasons and decisions are connected to causes. Well, I believe that we are just going to be talking about choices today. YOUR child is just going to understand 1 word today and how that word concerns them.
For every choice there is a consequence. That is why it is important for YOUR child to learn to make GOOD choices because possible then their personal development will continue upward on onward rather than spiraling out of control into some negative aspects of life. And we all have either been there ourself or know someone who did. None of us want that for our children.
Knowing before hand what to watch for. Being proactive as YOUR child develops. Help them to make the right choices:
1. Tell them a story of YOU and making a choice and the consequences of that choice.
2. Tell them a story of a friend or acquiance of making a choice and consequences of that choice.
Catherine Pulsifer said:
“Life presents many choices, the choices we make determine our future.”
Dr. Kathleen Hall said:
“Your life is a product of choices.”
Professor Randy Pausch wrote the most beautiful word about choice:
“We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.”
He was dying of cancer and gave a last lecture in the classroom to his students. He had a wife and 3 children and he knew he could not change the cards he was dealt but he could play out HOW to make the choices as he was dying so his family would have beautiful memories of a very tragic illness.
How is YOUR child going to play out their hand?
YOU can help by giving them guidance and support in making GOOD choices so that as they develop the choice they make today will still be good choice after ten years from now and going into adulthood.
What would the outcome be with the Choice YOUR child makes?
Make a list of the PROS and CONS of any Choice-
As YOUR child starts learning to make a choice:
Do I want red or blue?
Do I want carrots or corn?
Do I want to smoke or not?
Do I want to drink or not?
these are all choices/decisions YOUR child may come across as they go into Middle School and on into adulthood.
There are consequences for each of those questions as there is for any choice we make in life.
BE PREPARED for those choices
Does YOUR child know that there is always a CHOICE?
How to make the right CHOICE?
Does YOUR child know that there is always a Consequence of a CHOICE?
What that Consequence is?
