You can help your child learn the skill of goal-setting, which is critical for developing grit and just simply getting what you want out of life.

Some of the other reasons why your child should learn goal-setting include teaching them to take responsibility for their own behaviors and learning

Goal-setting can become a helpful life-long habit that promotes a “can-do” attitude.

Steps to help your child set Goals

#1 Let them choose their big goal:

What is one thing do you wish you could achieve?

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

#2 Discuss the purpose of their goal

What do you think is the greatest benefit to you doing well in this class how can that help others?

#3 Break the big goal into smaller steps

Start to break down their big goal. Write down the big goal then work your way through the steps it would take to achieve it.

#4 Brainstorm potential obstacles

Encourage your child to plan for potential obstacles.

Ask if you feel like giving up, what will you do instead?

What is something your child wants to achieve? Ask them.

When teaching your child how to set and achieve goals. But you need to get them involved in understanding and practicing a simple formula. The following steps have served well in working with their child on setting their goals.

Select an area for improvement. Be sure to pick an achievable goal.

Plan to set up some measurements that your child can use to see how well they are achieving their goals.

Show your child how to make course corrections if necessary.

Involve the whole family and support system.

Celebrate your child’s wins.

There should be short-term goals and long-term goals for your child.

Short term — I will get an A in this class

Long term — This year I will make the honor roll

Children that start ahead, stay ahead. Teaching your child goal-setting is by far the best way to help them start ahead and secure their future.

My Child to Identify and Reach Goals?

Here is a list that will help your child’s goal-setting:

  • Manage personal finances-start young, start small

  • Healthy body, mind, and spirit

  • How to achieve – setting goals for life

  • To manage themselves-their own motivation, attitude and knowing that they are the only ones that have full control over their future destiny

  • How to work with other people

Help your child get organized

Goal setting involves setting goals in the above areas.

Perseverance is such a big word but a child and adult both have to have perseverance during their life.

Tenacious is another big word but we all need to be tenacious at a time during our lives.

Everyone learns at different levels and one child may catch on all at once and another takes awhile.

Learn your child’s learning habits so you can help with the goal-setting process, along with the decision-making process which will be so important as their school years continue.
