Self-Discipline comes with Development
Everything YOUR child does, from getting up on time in the morning to getting their homework completed daily, will become a habit for adulthood and their profession. Middle School is where they start taking care of themself, get their homework done, let YOU know if they need extra help with school assignments. As YOUR child develops their Self-Discipline will raise along with their development level.
Let YOUR wonderful child know that the more self-discipline they have that the more you know their DECISIONS will be good when making choices as they grow.
Self-Discipline and Development
Never, ever raise your voice or let YOUR child raise their voice. It raises tension between parent and child and helping your child through this MOST IMPORTANT period of their life is a top priority for both YOU and YOUR child. Each child is different and understands instructions differently:
Starting the training in small, incremental steps –
setting their alarm so they can get up on time
taking their bath/shower at the same time every night
writing down a schedule of their week-homework and activities
changing their sheets every Saturday morning.
These are a few samples of how to get YOUR child into a self-disciplined mode.
REMEMBER: there is PASSIVE, ASSERTIVE, AND AGGRESSIVE. Be assertive in everything YOU do.
Never be that Passive or Aggressive person. At least be aware of these emotions so it helps in YOUR life along with YOUR child.
Some of the best ways to train a child in Self-Discipline skills are:
Provide structure-children like structure. Chaos is bad for any child.
Explain the rules behind your rules. Children need to hear YOUR reason.
Implement Appropriate Consequences. Every child needs to know the consequence of THEIR choice.
Praise good behavior. Children are empowered when they know they have done a good job
Teach Problem-solving skills-if a child has a problem getting dressed for school on time-have the outfit picked out the night before.
Model Self-Discipline-YOUR child watches you all the time you are their Person they rely on most-show YOUR stuff
Offer incentives-In YOUR job or family member jobs they like getting bonuses, raises and good marks in their jobs.
The earlier YOU start working on self-discipline with YOUR child the better their world flows as they develop and grow.
Having this routine will help them learn time-management for their daily home duties as well as their school work.
Being the best role model you can help with development in all areas. Make it as fun and interesting as possible in YOUR home because this is one of the most crucial attributes of YOUR child going through their school years and onto their profession and adulthood.
Teaching YOUR child is not an easy task and it can be called self-discipline, self-control, self-management or merely doing what you know you should do even when no one is looking.
