Making the Right Choice

Making good choices is a lot like learning how to tie shoes for young children; it is a skill that develops gradually over time as they mature and develop. Young children in preschool and kindergarten need lots of modeling and support when it comes to learning how to make good choices. They do not intend to make bad choices; they just need more practice and support making good ones.

At first, give the child small choices because as they develop their choices will become more important and impact how their future goes.

Do you want to use crayons or colored pencils?

Do you want to read this book or that book?

Decision making is crucial because the decisions your child makes will dictate the path that their lives take. They will need to judge the risks and rewards of their decisions in the short run and in the long term.

YOUR child will learn more by watching how YOU act than by listening to what YOU say. Make the right and good choices for your life and the Child will see that.

Start by seeing that YOUR expectations for them are developmentally appropriate. The child will learn to make decisions by making a lot of them.

I have found from raising 3 children – only give a child 2 choices – it is far too overwhelming to give them more than that as they are learning how to make the right choice for themself. The more decisions you can let your child have the better. After they have made the decision then ask them, “Did you like the decision you made, was it the right choice?

Choice and decision-making are an incremental process based on age and that is why YOU need to be sure of developmentally appropriate.

These decisions that YOUR child may make as their growing and developing can be detrimental and life-long decisions. None of us who are parents want that for our children. We want them to make good choices and make good decisions that will make them a great adult and follow them through their lifetime.

Children are going to make the wrong decision and choice over time. Which of us has not made bad decisions over our lifetime?

Making the Right Choice

Do not let bad-decision making continue. It is a skill and some children could become very good at making bad decisions or choices. Teach them that they are responsible for their bad decision making. Good decisions and choices are incremental and it starts as the child develops. As always, be that inspiration in good decision and choice making. As the child grows let them know that their decision-making and choices will make a difference in their life. Good grades will help them into college or into the profession they want.
