Middle School Years Bring New Academic Demands
There are also Social skills they will need to know about. So here we go: both academic skills and social skills are going to be needed going into Middle School. It is totally different environment than what your child has been used to up to this point in their life. This is a big step on the developmental level and remember, they are going from dependent on YOU the parent, the guardian, or teacher to their journey of being independent.

It will be helpful when the child starts Middle School:

So use YOUR judgment in seeing that the child is ready on their first day of Middle School

Elementary schools feed into the Middle School-so there will be lots of different children, from different economic/social levels.

Your child is unique – and wants to be appreciated for their uniqueness.
Be sure that they are up to speed on their math skills:

Solving word problems with multiplication, fractions or mixed numbers.

The child should be able to discuss details of both fictional and informational texts of varying lengths.

Practice mental math

The child needs to know many ways to find answers to questions and support their answers with facts and details

Practicing math and reading skills at home can help your child prepare for Middle School.
Going to Middle School will find the child more physically mature than emotionally mature.
The child of this age will be changing physically and everyone will develop at a different rate. And they need to know just because they are physically developing that does not mean they are mentally developing. The need for good sleeping pattern and have a good nutritional diet will help them in Middle School.
There will be major social and emotional growth. Let them know they do not have to be like others – peer pressure.

Schools give tours-so child can get into a routine of getting to class on time, lunch, bathrooms, gym, library.

A home routine will be different-child will need to learn to make adjustments: bedtime, studying time, extra time.
